DNC Chair Ken Martin: Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech Was ‘a Call to Action’

MARTIN: “Thank you, everybody. Thank you to Reverend Sharpton and to Martin Luther King III for your leadership. It is an honor to stand with all of you in this hallowed ground today, 63 years to the day since Dr. Martin Luther King summoned America to live up it to its highest ideals. Why does ‘I have a dream’ still stir our hearts 63 years later? Because it wasn’t simply a dream. It was a challenge, a demand, a call to action. Dr. King reminded us that America is not a finished product. America is a promise. A promise every generation is called upon to redeem. The work of building a more perfect union is never finished and the responsibility for carrying that work for it belongs to all of us. But for 63 years, there have been politicians, and we know they are, who quote Dr. King’s words while working to dismantle everything he fought for. They talk about judging people by the content of their character while trafficking in hateful rhetoric and pushing harmful policies.”
