In a letter to Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley, Hawley writes: ‘Recent examples of abuse and misuse of personal data reveal the woeful lack of safeguards in these systems. Your company’s internal policies are, in practice, the only safeguards for hundreds of millions of Americans.’ Hawley cites alleged cases of police employees accessing data for personal reasons and errors that he says led to innocent people being stopped or arrested. Flock operates a network of about 120,000 AI-powered cameras that record and analyze license plates and vehicle characteristics. That level of surveillance has drawn criticism from Republicans and Democrats. In Tempe, Arizona, for example, local officials turned off their Flock cameras. Flock CEO says Americans need privacy, but also safety.”
