Connecticut Secretary of State: ‘Should Mail-In Voting Become Much More Complicated, We Have Other Ways that Voters Can Cast the Ballot’

THOMAS: “Yeah, it’s an excellent question. And this is why it’s so irresponsible, really, to even consider implementing this rule so close to an election. Here in Connecticut, we are 36 days away from needing to mail out ballots and 68 days from the election. And people, when you see these things on paper, they sound easy, but they all have downstream effects. Every rule has to become a system. Every system has to be taught to the local election officials. And here in Connecticut, we don’t have county government. So, every single municipality runs its own elections. So, getting the information transmitted, new envelopes would have to be printed. There are so many logistical challenges, but election officials are always scenario planning. So, while we hope for the best, we are just now in our office trying to figure out how to cope with the worst. But the one thing we are trying to get the message out to voters here in Connecticut is that should mail-in voting become much more complicated, we have other ways that voters can cast the ballot.”
