Dem Virginia Rep. Don Beyer on a Recent Case Involving an Illegal Immigrant in Northern Va. Who Fled the Country

‘There is a failure in the system along the way’

EXCERPT:

BALLASY: "A suspect was allowed out of the mental hospital on a 48-hour pass — "
BEYER: "I heard that after I talked to you."
BALLASY: " — and it was taxpayer-funded apartment that he was able to go back to. Should that program end?"
BEYER: "I don't know if the program should end, but that particular case was a disaster. You don't let somebody who's charged with murder out on a weekend pass, I don't think. Seems to me that that’s — anyone who has been accused of murder is an imminent danger to the community."
BALLASY: "So you think they should disqualify someone that fits, like this person, this suspect's profile from getting those passes and going to taxpayer-funded apartments."
BEYER: "I'm not a law enforcement professional, but it certainly seems to be common sense."
