Cisco Aguilar: ‘The Potential of a State to Face Defamation Suits’ Is Significant When Citizens Are Wrongly Accused
RUSH EXCERPT:
AGUILAR: “It is no, I’m sorry that we think we have the arrogance as Americans, that somebody who is in this country trying to become a citizen is going to jeopardize that opportunity to participate in our elections. That is going to be detrimental to that individual and that individual’s family. We have laws on the books to ensure that our elections are safe and secure. Nevada runs some of the safest, most secure and accessible elections in the country. But we also have to follow the law, as you have seen, and we won again today. We are being sued about every single decision we make, but we are standing up and we are pushing back and we are actually saying, this is not something you can do, because if you accuse a registered voter that is an American citizen, that they are not a citizen, the potential of a state to face defamation suits and that liability is significant. And I’m not willing to put the state of Nevada in that type of jeopardy."
