SiriusXM host Stephen A. Smith expressed astonishment when independent California Rep. Kevin Kiley told him his state prohibits voter identification requirements during a Wednesday interview on “Straight Shooter with Stephen A.”

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1174 in September 2024, barring local governments from mandating voters present identification. Kiley highlighted the issue when Smith asked on his show whether he supported the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
