Peter Baker on Renee Good: Trump Is Trying to Set the Narrative That ‘She Was a Threat,’ Not the Officer
RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well, first of all, he’s been providing false accounts of what happened in the interview with my colleagues. He first said that renee good ran over the ice officer you see on the video. Clearly, he was not run over. Now, he may have thought he was going to be run over. That’s a point of dispute. Obviously, that’s something you’ve heard people say, but in the video, he’s not actually run over by by the car. Trump said that anyway and pushed that theory. Now, when that’s been debunked, he’s saying, well, she was basically asking for it. That’s the same thing that jd Vance has been saying she’s to blame for what happened here. And this goes to our very polarized political nature. What’s really fascinating to me is watching people look at that video you just showed and come away with very disparate conclusions from it, right? A lot of people look at that video and say, clearly, she did not seem to be threatening. She was trying to pull away not to actually hit him, whether she whether he saw it that way, of course, is a. Different story. But a lot of people who are defending ice look at that video and say she in fact was coming after him. You could see from his point of view on the video he’s taking that he sees the car as a threat. And that disparity of viewpoints, that rorschach test about what we all saw goes to our moment in politics right now. Right. We’re living in different realities. And what Trump is trying to do is, is is set the narrative that she was a threat, not the officer that she brought it on herself, and therefore neither the officer nor Trump’s policies of aggressive immigration enforcement are to blame here."
