Peter Baker on MTG: Republicans Can Only Afford to Lose Three Votes, It’s Harder to Get Anything Done Until an Election to Replace Her

‘It’s always a very volatile thing for speaker Mike Johnson to be trying to manage this very narrow majority he’s got’

RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well, of course, every single seat matters when you are this tight right now, obviously, as you’re showing right there, the Republicans can only afford to lose three, three votes on any particular issue, assuming Democrats are united on the other side before they lose control of the floor. So it makes it much harder to get anything done. And it’s going to be a few months until you can have a special election to replace her. And we do have these three vacancies out there right now. So it’s always a very volatile thing for speaker Mike Johnson to be trying to manage this very, very narrow majority he’s got. Having said that, what’s really fascinating is this has not been a Congress that has actually done that much right. This is a president who is using mostly using his executive power to accomplish the things he wants to do with with only a few exceptions, he really hasn’t asked Congress to do things for him. He hasn’t used Congress to create new laws and new programs, or change programs, or get rid of programs, even in a way that a new president typically does. So you know, what he wants in terms of the house is mainly, you know, a body that doesn’t get in his way. And that’s that seems to be where Mike Johnson is focused on right now."
