Peter Baker on Trump: Imagine Any Other President Signing a Check from Taxpayers to Himself for $230 M, ‘It’s Mind Boggling’

‘We use the word unprecedented so many times we ought to retire it, because it doesn’t mean anything anymore’

RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well, it’s worth remembering that the Department of Justice is run by two of his former own lawyers, his own personal lawyers, Pam Bondi, represented him in one of the impeachment trials when he was president. The first time. Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, was a defense attorney for Trump during these investigations while he was out of office. And so the people who would then pass on that request are people who literally have been involved in his personal defense. And as he himself said this week, it would be strange that he finally gets to be the person who makes the final sign off on paying himself money from the taxpayers. But that’s what he seems to be envisioning here. And it’s it’s a remarkable thing. You know, we use the word unprecedented so many times we ought to retire it because it doesn’t mean anything anymore, I suppose. But can you imagine any other president signing a check from the taxpayers to himself or $230 million? It’s it’s it’s extraordinary and just it’s mind boggling. But the logic of this is, well, they investigated me and therefore they owe me money. That then would presumably apply across the board. Wouldn’t that apply to Hillary Clinton, who was investigated but not charged? Should he have to write a check out of taxpayer money to Hillary Clinton, or to say, some of the people he has tried to get prosecuted unsuccessfully, like Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, some of these others, would they have a claim to taxpayer money? Might, you know, you don’t hear them talking about that. You hear him only talking about money for himself."
