NYT’s Peter Baker: Past Presidents Tend to Calm the Waters After a Crisis, That’s Not How Trump Reacts to These Things
EXCERPT:
BAKER: “Look, this is a president who knew Charlie Kirk, and his son was close to Charlie Kirk, his Vice President, J.D Vance, very close to Charlie Kirk. They take it personally. They’re angry. They’re upset about this. So you hear that anger in the president’s voice over these last few days. Now, that’s a different way of approaching it than many presidents. Other presidents, even when they get angry at events like this, tend to try to work toward calming the waters, toward finding unity in a moment of crisis. And that’s not the way Trump tends to react to these things. He’s talked about how the radical left is responsible, how he wants to go after them. He, of course, defines the radical left in very broad terms, not just anybody who might be involved with this particular event, but anybody who he deems to be out of the mainstream as far as he’s concerned. And I think that’s a bit different way of looking at it than most presidents have in these moments of crisis."
