Rep. Simon: Trump Is ‘Taking Us Back to a Segregated America’
EXCERPT:
SIMON: "You know, the California Democrats believe both in our state’s constitution and we believe in the Constitution of the United States. We are taking this issue to the voters, unlike what was done in Texas. I want folks to understand why we’re doing this. Texas, the governor and the president of the United States and the Republican legislature, they essentially — essentially have brought us back to a 1950s America, the violation of the Voting Rights Act. They want to create a Texas where people of color do not have choice, they do not have voice. And clearly, this is about the 2026 midterms. They have redrawn, outside of the census calendar, seats that now will make the state a red state and beyond. What we’re saying in California is we aren’t going to sit around and watch the Republican Party and our president, right, take us back to a segregated America. If we don’t stop the Trump train in its tracks, we will lose health care, we will lose the dignity and respect that folks like yourself, sir, fought for tooth and nail. Folks died for the Voting Rights Act. Folks died for — for all that we hold dear. The desegregation of our country, we’re going right back there.”
