Mary McCord Says John Bolton Investigation Is for ‘Retribution Purposes’

‘We are now seeing so many investigations that seem to be for retribution purposes’

EXCERPT:

McCORD: "But by long-standing tradition, going back to Watergate, there has always been a policy enforced at the Department of Justice and at the White House of not, you know, sharing information about ongoing investigations between the Department of Justice and the White House, and that is so that the American people will not worry that the Department of Justice is being used — misused for political purposes, so that they can feel more comfortable that when the Department of Justice launches an investigation and continues and investigation and seeks an indictment, for example, or charges, that they’re doing that based on their independent, you know, justification based on evidence and facts that they have established through their investigation and not because they’ve been asked to do so by the president. So, a query in this administration, when we are now seeing so many investigations that seem to be for retribution purposes. We've had announcements of investigations into John Brennan and Jim Comey, people that certainly the president perceives as political enemies. Now John Bolton. And, you know, we know about an enemies list in Kash Patel's book. There are other people that folks at DoJ have disparaged in their public comments. So, you know, those norms seem to be broken here. The president says he didn’t know about this. We’ll see if that’s the case. He says he’s going to be briefed on it. Even that is — you know, is somewhat against the norms in terms of DoJ briefing the president on an ongoing investigation. So, you know, we’re in a really different territory than the history of the Department of Justice since Watergate."
