Gregory Meeks on Redistricting: We’ve Got To Do the Same in California, New York, Maryland, Illinois
EXCERPT:
MEEKS: "The national fight is, we cannot just sit back and allow President Donald Trump to go to a governor, like he’s done with Abbott, and say, 'Find me five more Republican seats,' and then take his vice president to Ohio to say, 'Let’s look at that, and let’s look at that state and see how many more.' We’ve got to make sure, as Governor Newsom is doing in California, that if Texas moves forward with five seats, then we’re going to make sure that California is going to do something in that regard. We’ve seen their plan. We’ve got to do the same in New York, in Maryland, in Illinois. We need to go around and make sure that we fight fire with fire. You know, we tried to make, when we were in the majority, on the H.R. 1, a bill that would have independent commissions throughout the country so there is a level playing field for all, you know, John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and not one Republican voted for it. We passed it in the House. We couldn’t get it passed, not one in the Senate. That’s what we’ve got to do. We’ve got to make sure, if they do it in Texas, we’ve got to do it in our states also, to make sure that that playing field is level."
