NYT’s Peters: Trump Is ‘More Inclined’ to Back Andrew Cuomo for NYC Mayor
EXCERPT:
PETERS: “Well, you know, it’s a bit counterintuitive, Chris, because you would think that Trump, like many other Republicans, would want Zohran Mamdani to be the nominee for the Democrats, and they would want him to win. That way they can point to what they can say is a radical leftist running the nation’s biggest city. This is the future of the Democratic Party. This is how radical they really are. You know, that would be the Republican talking point, and it already is. So, Trump actually, I think, wants something a little different. He is concerned about the fate of the city. Remember, this is the city where he grew up, the city that allowed him to, you know, make his reputation and kind of catapulted him to national celebrity as this real estate developer, reality show host. But he also has business interests here. So it’s not just personal, it’s financial, his interest in making sure that New York does not falter. So I think, you know, my reporting tells me that Trump, as much as he would like to have a foil in somebody he and the party can portray as a radical, he also wants to see New York City do well, and he doesn’t believe that Mamdani is the candidate to do that. That leaves Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams, and he is, at least for the moment, according to our reporting in the Times, more inclined to like Andrew Cuomo.”
