Brit Hume: ‘Simply a Fact of Life, Tax Cuts Benefit Taxpayers’

‘This is an income tax cut’

EXCERPT:

HUME: "Yeah. I must say, Gillian, I have covered a lot of these tax cuts debates and they all end up sounding very much the same. Republicans say, 'You gotta pass the tax cut or at least keep the taxes low because it will stimulate the economy and benefit the people. And the Democrats say, 'No, you are screwing the little guy and the middle class,' and it goes on like that. That’s par for the course. Understand something about this, though. This is an income tax cut. And income tax cuts benefit the people who pay income taxes. About 40% of the households in the United States today do not pay any federal income tax. Now, they pay other taxes, Social Security taxes, local taxes, property taxes and so on, but they don’t pay any federal income tax. It’s very hard to design a tax cut that benefits people who don’t pay taxes. The president has tried with the no taxes on tips and no taxes on overtime and so on, but it is simply a fact of life that, you know, tax cuts benefit taxpayers. And this is something that Democrats have had a wonderful time through the years using to accuse Republicans of trying to help the rich and screw the poor.“
