Robert Garcia: Congress ‘Is Losing its Ability to Do Oversight’
EXCERPT:
GARCIA: “And this funding is incredibly dangerous because it’s being paired with a diminished role for members of Congress to conduct oversight. We are seeing members of Congress right now going across the country to try to visit these detention centers, try to visit some of these facilities, and now they are being turned away. And we know that in the law, we actually have the ability to go unannounced to these detention centers, members of Congress do, and investigate and inspect. Now Secretary Noem has put in a new law, which is unconstitutional, in place that is forcing members to actually have to wait days to actually inspect these facilities. So, more money for ICE, larger detention centers. We already know that people that are there are not being given access to lawyers in many cases. And now Congress is losing its ability to do oversight. So this is a very dangerous moment in our country, and certainly when it comes to immigration policy."
