Ro Khanna: Trump’s Strikes on Iran Were ‘Unconstitutional’

‘People should go on the record and it’s very important to do this now so that we can signal that we don’t want further escalation with Iran’

EXCERPT:

KHANNA: “Well, first of all, the strikes were unconstitutional. We can’t just go bomb another country in Iran without congressional authorization. This is why Representative Massie, a Republican, and I have a War Powers Resolution in the House of Representatives. Senator Kaine has a War Powers Resolution in the Senate on Monday. Both the Senate and the House could have a vote on this resolution. People should go on the record and it’s very important to do this now so that we can signal that we don’t want further escalation with Iran. My concern is two things with the strikes. One, it puts our troops at risk in the Middle East. It puts American personnel at risk. It puts all Americans at risk. I am hoping that Iran is not foolish enough to retaliate against Americans, because that is going to escalate the situation, but it has put all of us at risk. And the second thing is, President Obama had a JCPOA agreement that limited enrichment to under 5% only at the Natanz facility. Donald Trump ripped that agreement up. You had 60% enrichment going on in Fordo, where they struck. And the problem is that without a diplomatic solution, you’re going to have Iran now kick out the IAEA inspectors, rip up the NPT, and be more determined to build with the know-how to do it in spare centrifuges. So this does not solve the problem over the long-term.”
