Jonathan Capehart: Kristi Noem Should Not Be DHS Secretary After She Said Sen. Padilla ‘Lunged at Her’
EXCERPT:
CAPEHART: “Yes, that is the key question. Can they be worked with? You know, I can understand why Democratic members of the Senate decided to vote to confirm Kristi Noem. There is the tradition that, you know, it’s advise and consent. The president should have the cabinet that he wants. Particularly with this — with this administration, there are way too many people in cabinet positions they aren’t qualified for. But let’s just, you know, let’s just put this aside. You know, these are — these are — Secretary Noem just should not be in this position. And I say that, one, not just because of her qualifications or lack thereof for Homeland Security, but just take her statements after what happened to Senator Padilla and saying, her office saying that he lunged at her, even though we saw on video with our own eyes on a loop that that did not happen. And so, you know, Democrats need to work with Republicans. They are in the majority. The Republic — a Republican is president of the United States. His administration is filled with Republican true believers. They’ve got to try to figure out how to work with them. But as we have seen with everything that’s been happening with ICE in particular, they are not, they don’t seem to be interested in working with Congress as a body, and certainly they’re not interested in working with Democratic members of Congress in particular.”
