Applebaum: We’ve Seen Many Decisions Against the Lawless Actions of Trump, Musk and DOGE

‘The idea that the executive attacks the judges, this is a pattern we’ve seen in other times’

RUSH EXCERPT:
APPLEBAUM: "So first of all. The idea that the executive attacks. The. Judges, this. Is a. Pattern we’ve seen in other times. In other places. There was a similar, similar. Series of events happened in Mexico under the previous Mexican president. Which led to a change in the Constitution. And. They will now have elected. Judges in Mexico. Including elected members. Of the. Supreme Court with campaigns. Some of the campaigns. Are very. Ugly, and you can see already. The decline in the in the in the nature of the judiciary there. I lived also in Poland during a period when there was a kind of autocratic, populist government that also tried to undermine the judiciary. They did so by seeking to pack their equivalent of the of the Supreme Court. So it’s something that executives do when they feel frustrated by the rule of law. So far, with some exceptions, our judiciary has held up really well. They have. We’ve seen a number of brave judges make statements that are designed not just to not just to hold up the law, but to show, to describe and explain why they’re holding up the law. I think that’s a really important function of judges. And we’ve seen many decisions, actually, against the lawless actions of, of the president or of doge or Elon Musk. But the question now, you know, the rubber is beginning to hit the road. And the question now is, will the executive listen to the judiciary? And what will be the effect of these kinds of threats? And will they grow into some some violence?"
