Eugene Robinson: There Are Things That Will Erode the Sort of Absolute Faith in Donald Trump that a Lot of Voters Have Had
EXCERPT:
ROBINSON: “So, you know, he’s saying that, you know, tariffs are the best thing and they’re going to make everything great. You know, Michigan, right next to Canada, you know, and so this idea that Canada is evil to a — you know, in a state where people cross that border just almost daily, just kind of as it didn’t even seem like a border at all in the past, that doesn’t compute. That doesn’t match up with reality. And it certainly hasn’t produced the sort of economic benefits that Trump says it will produce. And again, on and on, you look at the immigration issue and people absolutely generally support his tough-on-immigration stance. or tough-on-illegal-immigration, but when you get down to the particulars, when you get down to the to that family that lives down the street, that are really good people, and you start to worry about them, when you get down to these cases of, you know, a child with stage four cancer, who’s a U.S. citizen, being sent away with his or her mother, I mean, these things will erode the sort of absolute faith in Donald Trump that a lot of voters have had. And the question politically is whether — who’s going to pick that up, who in the Democratic Party or perhaps outside of the Democratic Party is going to politically capitalize on the polling numbers that we've seen."
