Rubio: The World Hasn’t Gotten Any Bigger, but Somehow the State Department Continues to Grow
RUSH EXCERPT:
RUBIO: "We haven’t slashed anything yet. The world, the planet is the exact same size that it was 20 years ago and the State Department is somehow almost double the size. So the world hasn’t gotten any bigger and somehow the State Department continues to grow. This isn’t just about saving money and this is primarily about making sure every bureau and every office in the State Department has a purpose and they’re fulfilling them and what this is about is empowering the regional bureaus and embassies. We want to return more power and influence and more responsibility to our embassies and the regional bureaus that oversee them. The 15% you’re referring to is after we reorganized we will ask the bureauheadses and many who are career foreign service officer to look at through bureaus and suggest to us 15% reductions, suggest to us 15% reductions and then look at that. That’s not an unreasonable number and this is an organization that should have been done 10, 15 years ago, both Democrat and Republican would have loved to have done it. I happen to be fortunate to work for a president that allowed us to do it, that actually asked us to do it. I think it will make the State Department more nimble and effective and will empower diplomats to finally be able to do their jobs in ways that they’ve been held back from doing them in the past because of the bureaucracy and redundancy in the State Department."
