Flashback: Chuck Schumer Argues for No ID Requirements for First Time Voters by Mail
EXCERPT:
SCHUMER: "It disenfranchises so many who are aren’t typical middle-class Americans. And I would ask my colleagues to think about that. Not to say, 'Me and my 20 best friends, we can vote easily, and the only reason we wouldn’t want a photo ID is 'cause we’d be committing fraud.' You’re right. That’s not true of a poor person who doesn’t have a car, doesn’t have a phone, doesn’t own a home. It’s not true of a disabled person who cannot drive, can’t operate their own bank account. It’s not true of an elderly person who has to have most of their things done for them by somebody else. And yet, our Constitution, not Chuck Schumer, not Ron Wyden, not Chris Dodd, says their right to vote is every bit as sacred as ours. That’s what this bill seeks."
