NICHOLS: "Well, in addition to the problem that you and David were just talking about, which is Donald Trump’s really weird, you know, affinity and affection for Vladimir Putin, what you’re seeing now and in the past week is what happens when you send complete rank amateurs up against hardened professionals. This is really just a staggering display of diplomatic incompetence, because the people involved are not experienced diplomats. They’ve never dealt with the Russians. They have no experience with these kind of negotiations. They don’t really have a deep understanding of the issues involved here and so, you know, they end up going and getting taken to the cleaners, because that’s what happens when rookies go up against pros."
