Jon Meacham: The Scary Part Is, What’s the Incentive for Trump to Change Course Because He Doesn’t Have to Face the Voters Again

‘Unless there’s a radical, radical constitutional crisis, he doesn’t have to face the voters again’

EXCERPT:

MEACHAM: “And I don’t think, you know, as George W. Bush would say, I don’t think we should misunderestimate the power of this to peel off the enabling support. I’m not talking about the MAGA base of folks, which, in a very rough sense, I think is about 35% of that number. But the 15% that we all know and could probably name a lot of them, who have twice and maybe three times voted for President Trump, when their interests began to diverge from what the president is actually doing, that’s a fascinating question. Now, the scary part is, what’s the incentive for President Trump to change course? Because unless there’s a radical, radical constitutional crisis, he doesn’t have to face the voters again. And so a critical question to me is, what is Donald Trump’s incentive going forward? Lincoln told us this, all men act on incentive. He doesn’t have to go back to the country. So how does he define success? How does he measure it? And on that, on those two questions hangs a huge amount of wealth, prosperity, security, stability."
