Mike Donilon: It Was Crazy That Dems Walked Away from Biden, ‘the Single Biggest Vote-Getter in American History’

DONILON: “And the truth is, as we sit here today, he is the only person who has ever beaten Trump. No one else has ever done it. But he did. So, that’s why he ran. You know, as I looked at it, look, first of all, I thought It was his decision to make. Some people think like I can walk around and tell Joe Biden to do something. Like, it’s not — (Laughs) Let me tell you, when you stand next to a president and he says, ‘Look. I want to run,’ you know... And I believed he was the best candidate. I did. You know, look, there’s a lot of debate about it, he was too old, the polling numbers weren’t great, you know, there is a whole analysis, which I get. But here is the thing that I thought. In 2020, Joe Biden got 81 million votes in America. Okay? 81 million votes. That’s more votes than anybody has gotten in history. That is still more votes than anyone has gotten in history. Trump got 77 million. Now, we’ll get into this debate about, well, let’s just go inside the four or five battlegrounds and we’ll add his number up there and... Look, simple math: Biden got 81 million votes, and to my mind, that’s something to bring into an election. In my experience, when someone has voted for you, you got a decent chance of getting them to vote for you again. And I thought it was crazy that we walked away from the single biggest vote-getter in American history. And it wasn’t like this happened 10 years ago. It happened four years ago.”
