John Oliver Says Protests After the Muslim Ban in the First Trump Admin. Gave His Soul ‘Vigor’

[Colbert] ‘Things that gave your soul some vigor and kept you going’

EXCERPT:

OLIVER: "Yes, that's true. And creating the show last week, what we tried to do was contextualize the feelings that people have right now. And the thing we hit on was the fact that there is understandably some eye-rolling of the kind of resistance of 2016. I will say that there was a really interesting quote that we used from one of the lawyers inside the DoJ who was fighting some of the travel bans at the time, and he said that seeing the people occupy those airports, seeing the protests was really useful to him, because it was energizing him and also making them feel like they were acting on behalf of the people’s will. And he said, 'Activism outside our building helped with the activism inside it.' And I think that’s really important to remember. You can send a message. You don't have to wait just to vote. It’s valuable to send messages, even if that message is, [bleep] this [bleep]. It's sometimes the strongest message to send."
