GLAAD’s Sarah Kate Ellis Blames Facebook, X Algorithms for ‘Trans Women Being Murdered on the Street’
EXCERPT:
ELLIS: “Mark goes with the wind and is always chasing a dollar. And so we know that algorithms are where the money is made, and the hate algorithms are the better ones. So what we've enacted is free speech for algorithms, not free speech for citizens. Because we do know that more people are accepting and believe in equality for LGBTQ people. But you would never believe that if you go on to X or now Facebook. That's not where it's happening. And to your point, what's happening online is happening in real life. It models one to the other. And we're seeing an uptick in violence in the United States against LGBTQ people. We had to, last year, start an alert desk to track the violence because it had gotten so heinous and out of control. And that's everything from attacks at drag shows to trans women being murdered on the street. So we're seeing a direct correlation between the two.”
