Fmr. Romney Camp Manager: Nobody Is Suggesting Brokered Convention
[excerpt]
CAVUTO: “Katie what do you think of Mitt Romney coming out and saying, I’m not trying to stop Donald Trump from getting the nomination if he’s at 1237 or better it’s his. I cannot support him if he does. Some have interpreted that to mean he is trying to interfere with the popular will of the voters. What do you say?”
PACKER GAGE: “Well I think everybody has a right to their opinion, and Mitt Romney is no different. Lots of elected officials have endorsed candidates — have rejected this particular candidate and I don’t see why Mitt Romney is barred from having an opinion and trying to exercise some influence over, you know, a process that is still very, very, early you know, in the process, that only about a third of the delegates have been selected. Nobody is suggesting a brokered convention. But there is a suggestion —“ [crosstalk]
CAVUTO: “But a lot of people are.”
PACKER GAGE: “ — other that there might be a contested — “
CAVUTO: “A lot of people see that happening.”
PACKER GAGE: “No, no, no.”
CAVUTO: “You don’t see that happening?”
PACKER GAGE: “No, there’s a difference between a brokered convention and a contested convention. A candidate doesn’t become the nominee until they have 1237 delegates.”
CAVUTO: “True.”
PACKER GAGE: “And so there is very likely to be a contested convention.”
