Peter Baker: Trump Won the Popular Vote and that’s a Big Deal, but It’s Not a Majority
RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Let’s remember the numbers. They are not 100% finished but as it looks right now, Trump has just under 50%, 49.98% of the popular vote. Now he wins the popular vote which he had not done the other two times and that is a big deal, something to brag about but it is not a majority. It is only around 1.6 percentage points over Kamala Harris. That is one of the smallest we have had since the 19th century. It is not a land slide by conventional measures by any stretch. He didn’t have much of the coat tails. They gained four seats in the Senate. That is a major victory. In the states where he ran the most, the five battleground states where they had Senate races, he only brought in one Republican and four Democrats won. So his coat tails didn’t bring in additional seats in the house. But the reason he wants to call it a land slide is in order to, first of all his ego, everything with him is the biggest, the best, the first, the most, all of those things. He refuses to believe he is anything other than the greatest that ever lived but as a matter of political strategy, it is a way of maximizing the impact and influence. You are much likely to get your agenda through Congress if you got a land slide than if you say I barely won but you should vote for my legislation."
