HIMES: "No question about it. But my point about whataboutism still stands. You know that we’re in a fact-free zone here, Joe. So you issued that challenge and you're absolutely right, there’s never been a Democratic leader or a Democratic candidate for president who has used rhetoric like telling Proud Boys to stand back and stand by, never. But I promise you, as we speak right now, your social media feed is filling up with back-benchers and state assembly people from Oregon, etc., who have said unwise things. But my larger point is here, if we succumb to the destruction of moral discernment that comes with a reliance on the what-about defense, 'They do it too,' we're done. We're done. Democracy is over. And again, this is not an argument that we accept from our children, and yet somehow it is the defense in American politics."
