Eddie Glaude Jr.: ‘My Heart Was in My Gut Last Night’ But ‘We’re Going to Have to Save Democracy’
EXCERPT:
GLAUDE JR.: “And the second point that I came away with, as I watched Biden look listless, as his mouth was agape, as I worried about him tapering off as he was responding, I was thinking that democracy is on the ballot here and that this is not about that Donald Trump or this is not about — well, it is about Donald Trump in a sense. It’s not about Joe Biden, it's about us, and we’re going to have to save democracy. So I was thinking to myself, Willie, that the Democratic Party going to flood the zone. We will have to do blocking and tackling at a much more intense level. We'll have to get out the vote. We'll have to get everyday ordinary people to understand that a politician's not going to save us. You can’t go try to find Whitmer, you can’t go to try to find Newsom. Nobody else is going to come to rescue this democracy. Everyday ordinary people will have to do it. And so that’s what I came out of this as I was trying to deal with my own melancholy, my own sense of fear and trauma, my own worry as it were, Willie, and that is that we’re going to have to do this and the Democratic Party’s going to understand that, that it’s in our interest, everyday ordinary voters' interest, to get out and vote and make sure that the likes of Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans do not make their way to the White House again."
