‘South Park’ Navigates the American Healthcare System: ‘The Medical Director’s Job Is Just To Say No’
EXCERPT:
UNKNOWN MALE: "Well, hello there. Looking to get some insurance?"
KYLE: "No, my friend’s mom already has insurance with your company."
UNKNOWN MALE: "Oh, great. You’re here to pay your bill."
KYLE: "No, no, we’re not here to give you money. We’re here to file a claim for my friend’s medication."
UNKNOWN MALE: "Oh, you want money from us. Right through that door over there."
UNKNOWN MALE 2: "Hello."
KYLE: "We want to file a claim to get my friend’s weight loss drugs paid for."
UNKNOWN MALE 2: "Oh, okay."
KYLE: "Do you want to know his policy number or anything?"
UNKNOWN MALE 2: "Let me — let me just speak with our medical director... Yeah, yeah, okay. Sorry, but we don’t pay for medicines for obesity 'cuz it’s not a disease."
KYLE: "Who was that?"
UNKNOWN MALE 2: "That was the medical director. The medical director decides what claims are valid for us to pay for."
KYLE: "But you didn’t say who the patient was or what was wrong with him."
UNKNOWN MALE 2: "Right. The medical director's job is just to say no."
