Obama: I Saw ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ in 1975
Despite a White House screening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which President Obama left a press conference to attend, today Obama told YouTube star Adande Thorne he's never seen the movie. He also struggled to answer basic questions today about the "Star Wars" franchise.
Asked first which character he most identified with, Obama appeared to have difficulty recalling their names, but eventually arrived at Hans Solo, saying "he's a bit of a rebel."
The president was then asked his favorite Star Wars film was. Obama replied "Number 1," which is "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace."
"I still remember when I saw it,” Obama said. "I was like 14, 15, and I went to the Cinerama Theater, right around the corner from my house."
"Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was actually released in 1999. If Obama was referring to the original "Star Wars" film, he was actually 16 at the time, as it was released in 1977 (Obama was born in 1961).
But that's not to say he's tuned out from pop culture. Obama said the rapper Drake "is an outstanding entertainer," but Kendrick Lamar is actually the best rapper today. "His last album was outstanding," Obama said of Lamar. "Best album of the year."
