Fmr. Clinton Speechwriter: ‘Injustice’ to Reagan to Compare Trump to Him
LAFFER: “Yeah. Don I don’t agree with you on that. I mean, this is exactly the criticism that was posted to Reagan in 1980 that he wasn’t experienced, he was an actor. I mean, he spoke other people’s lines and all of that. And then we had the greatest president in my lifetime. I mean, I think these people —” [crosstalk]
BAER: “How long has Ronald Reagan been governor of California before he became president? How many times —” [crosstalk]
LAFFER: “And he wasn’t the great governor.”
BAER: “He had run for president twice before.”
LAFFER: “Yes, he had lost twice before and it was still the same — the same criticisms that you are saying.”
BARTIROMO: “Well, Secretary Clinton was senator from New York and first lady and New York and secretary of state. So, I mean, she wasn’t necessarily having the experience Don that you are talking about her husband had.”
BAER: “I think it does an injustice to Ronald Reagan and what he accomplished and who he was when he came to the presidency to compare where Donald Trump is today to where Ronald Reagan was in 1980.”
BARTIROMO: “Go ahead, go ahead, Art.”
LAFFER: “No, no. What I am saying here Reagan wasn’t what you see him as before he was elected president. He became the super large hero, my hero for sure, during the presidency, not before. We are looking at a group of candidates before they are elected. And if you look at any Reagan books, or look at that ‘New York Times’ Ragan book that was written by ‘The New York Times’ right after he was elected, but before he took office. And it came up — it was all of these comments about that he couldn’t handle this, he did know how to do that. He was unqualified and bang — he turned out to be the best president ever.”
