Dr. Siegel on Rising Cases of Measles, Tuberculosis: ‘Another Reason Why Securing the Border Is Important’
‘We are seeing a huge increase’
EXCERPT:
SIEGEL: "You know, Laura, whereas measles is unbelievably easy to catch — if you are just in a room with it, you catch it — TB is harder to catch. You think you are right it’s the border that’s the issue. Let me tell you what the problem is. In Central America, people are getting partly treated for tuberculosis. That’s right, partly treated. So they come in here, and that breeds a a resistant strain. We are seeing a huge increase, 5% to 10%, of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, which is extremely hard to eradicate, puts people in hospitals, spreads and leads to death. So that’s another reason that securing the border is so important."
