Tim Burchett on Insider Trading in Congress: ‘Oh, 100%, It’s Legal, but Is It Right? Hell No!’
EXCERPT:
BURCHETT: “Oh, 100 percent. But it’s legal. You know, that’s the thing. Is it ethical? I’d always — when I was mayor, somebody would come in, some snake oil salesman when I was mayor in Knox County, two terms, eight years, paid down debt, did crazy stuff like that, paid cash for schools, gave people raises and didn’t have to raise taxes. And these snake oil salesmen would come in and trying to whatever, and they’d say, first thing out of somebody’s mouth, they’d say ‘it’s legal, boss, it’s legal.’ And I’d say, but is it ethical? Legal is — slavery was legal. I’d hate to compare anything to slavery. Horrible, horrible deal, but it was legal. But was it right? Hell, no, it wasn’t right. It was the worst thing ever. And that’s — that’s what they’re getting by with all this stuff. It’s legal and they block every bill and just say — you know, I voluntarily — my $7,000 portfolio, my buddy Tommy Siler manages it for me and he does very well.”
