NYT’s Mara Gay: ‘Sad’ that Fox News Doesn’t Understand Job of Journalist Is ‘Supporting Democracy’

‘Journalism organizations are businesses, but there are lines that you cannot cross’

EXCERPT:

GAY: “Totally. I mean, it is sad to see a journalism organization kind of ditch or throw under the bus its biggest asset, which is the reporting that it produces, the journalism that it produces, that hopefully viewers can reply upon. We haven’t talked a lot about maybe the economic pressures that they were under. Jim alluded to it a moment ago, but you do have to wonder, I think, if maybe they had realized at some point that parts or large parts of their audience through social media, through place like Truth Social, had gotten ahead of them, and they’re trying to chase that audience down and hold onto them for dear life. And, of course, journalism organizations are businesses, but there are lines that you cannot cross. And just seeing them throw the journalistic integrity out the window is not only sad and diminishing to them as a brand and to the reporters who work there, who are doing good journalism, but actually it’s also really sad because part of our mission as journalists is to support democracy. And that doesn’t make you biased, that makes you a journalist in the United States as part of a western democracy and I think they’ve lost their way.”
