Michael Beschloss: ‘Nixon Did Not [Do] One-Tenth of the Bad Things that Donald Trump Did’ on Jan. 6

‘What Jefferson Davis said in the 1870s was, “We in the South did not lose the Civil War”‘

EXCERPT:

BESCHLOSS: "You know, who's Jefferson Davis? He wasn’t president of anything. Confederacy wasn't a country, but he waged an insurrection for four years and he was put in jail for two years and he was finally never tried because the equivalent of the Justice Department in those days, the Attorney General of the United States wasn’t sure he would get a conviction, was thought it would look too political. So what happened when Jefferson Davis was let out? Just like Donald Trump and Richard Nixon — although Nixon did I think not one-tenth of the bad things that Donald Trump did — what Jefferson Davis said in the 1870s was, 'We in the South did not lose the Civil War. We were not conquered. We were cheated out of our victory.' And a lot of people, especially in the South, believe that 100 years, did a lot to fuel the racist movement against Civil Rights. So the point I’m making is though oftentimes people think history is just facts and dates and it's not that interesting, but my point is, the way we see these events shapes the way we deal with politicians and our fellow citizens and what kind of a democracy we will be."
