Sen. Whitehouse: Republicans Packed the Supreme Court Using Dark Money
EXCERPT:
WHITEHOUSE: "Well, it's for sure corruption, as the Founding Fathers would have defined that term. I first noticed it when I was looking at why Republicans at all evaporated on climate change. When I got to the Senate, they were Republicans working on climate change. Soon as Citizens United was decided, as soon as the dark money flowed and huge denominations after that decision, they all stopped. You couldn't get a Republican near a climate bill. And so I began to look at that apparatus that was pushing climate denial, that dark money apparatus, and then I began to see that it's a lot of the same groups that are backing the Republicans, just like we described in the billion dollars in this election for the Republican Senate candidates, and then as I looked at the Supreme Court, I began to see the same groups showing up there in the effort to pack the court, in the effort to make sure that Garland did not get on the court, and that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and Barrett did get on the court. And all of the machinations that we had to live through in the Senate as they rammed those judges through against all sorts of Senate precedents and traditions and rules. So this book is about the way that the dark money effort that apparatus over time and with over half a billion dollars actually has packed the Supreme Court, captured it the way the old railroad barons would have captured a like 19th century Railroad Commission."
