Eugene Robinson on Abortion Ban: The GOP Has Become the ‘Dog that Caught the Bus’

‘It was kind of messy’

EXCERPT:

ROBINSON: "No, I think the distinction is absolutely right. I think the irony here of this whole thing is that generally public opinion in this country was basically where Roe v. Wade came out, right? There is a fundamental right to privacy, to abortion care that can’t be taken away or shouldn’t be taken away. However, there could be different interpretations, various kinds of limited restrictions in various states. Not everybody had to do the same thing. It was kind of messy and it wasn’t totally satisfactory to anybody, but that’s basically where the country was. And then to have that rug pulled out and to have the sort of total — hard to call them pro-life, I’ll call them anti-abortion zealots, imposing this draconian regime or trying their best to do it, not just in states but across the nation, horrifies a lot of people, I think. Certainly a lot of women who feel it personally, but a lot of men as well. So, this is an example of the Republican Party, you know, being the dog that caught the bus. And it’s hard even to use that metaphor, because it’s so serious. We’re talking about people as lives being so affected by this wrongheaded ruling."
