Ari Berman: Dems Should Abolish the Filibuster ‘to Save American Democracy’
EXCERPT:
BERMAN: "Well, I’m sure there will be retribution from Mitch McConnell, but I think it’s also important that Mitch McConnell already created an exception to the filibuster to confirm three justices for Donald Trump to the Supreme Court. So McConnell already broke the Senate. The Senate is already broken. The question is what to do about it. And right now the status quo benefits Republicans. Because if no voting rights legislation passes, then all of these efforts to undermine democracy at the state level will be allowed to go into effect going forward. So right now it’s on the Democrats to try to change their rules to save American democracy. Mitch McConnell doesn’t need to do anything because he’s already broken the U.S. Senate and Republicans are already undermining democracy at the state level."
