LA County D.A. Gascón: We Are Looking at Following German, Norwegian, Scandinavian Criminal Justice Model

GASCON: “One of the things that I’m saying ‎and frankly I’m going to spend a lot of ‎time this coming year now that we have a ‎management team in place and all that is ‎really ‎working at the state on the local level ‎to make sure that -- that we follow more of ‎a you know the German or the Norwegian ‎or the Canadian model where the model is. ‎if you're going to get out, and 95 of ‎people are going to get out, we're going ‎to start working in the excess strategy ‎immediately. So what does that mean? We're ‎going to get you mental health services, ‎make sure that we're taking care of your ‎physical well-being, make sure that we ‎start getting you ‎job skills, and dealing with substance ‎issues, and all those things so that when ‎you do get release you're also being ‎released into a place where you can get ‎marketplace housing, you can get ‎employment, and hopefully you will be a ‎productive member of society."
