Yglesias: We Could Fit 1 Billion Americans and Still Have France’s Population Density
EXCERPT:
YGLESIAS: "You know, the United States is actually very sparsely populated country. At 1 billion, it sounds like a lot. I mean, it’s a high number but we would have the population density of France, we would be about half Germany, much less dense than England or the United Kingdom. And we actually struggle in a lot of ways because we don’t have enough people, right? We have so many cities, the smaller cities in the northeast and almost all the cities in the Midwest have lost people and it’s very challenging to support the infrastructure and to support the school systems in places like Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, because they don’t have the tax base that those cities were built for. And if we could bring more people in, that helps stabilize our infrastructure problems."
