ABC’s Pierre Thomas: Gyrocopter Breach ‘Utter Security Failure ... a Wakeup Call’
THOMAS: “Law enforcement officials are concerned that millions of dollars deployed after 9/11 was not good enough to detect this small aircraft. It was an utter security failure and, sources say, a wake-up call. My sources say they have seen no evidence so far that radar or sensors detected it. But, Robin, that gyrocopter traveled more than 50 miles to get to Capitol. It should have been seen.”
ROBERTS: “Yes, because people want to know, is it technology or was it human failure to notice that it was flying in?”
THOMAS: “Exactly. Some sources are wondering if the copter was simply too small, flying too low or too slow to be detected. If you can’t see it, you can’t track it or intercept it. Normally, the militaries NORAD would be on alert and fighter jets will be dispatched. But that did not happen because apparently, no one saw this aircraft coming in mile after mile.”
