Pete Buttigieg Quotes Scripture: ‘Whoever Oppresses the Poor Taunts His Maker’
EXCERPT:
BUTTIGIEG: “And I belong to a faith tradition that teaches that salvation has to do with the lifting up those who are most in need, most marginalized. I think of the Scripture that says that whoever oppresses the poor taunts his Maker. I think of the Scripture that says that when you encounter somebody who is imprisoned, that you should imagine that you’re imprisoned with them. And I don’t think you have to be part of my particular faith tradition to have a moral code from just about any religion in any non-religious moral tradition I know of, that teaches about the importance of stepping outside of ourselves’ and into somebody else’s shoes. And getting outside of our own self importance and many of us do that partly through a relationship with God. All of us can do that in our relationships with each other and our relationship with our country.”
