Rep. Karen Bass: This Is About Much More than Just Collusion, Impeachment Is Not the Direction that We’re Going
EXCERPT:
REPORTER: "Should they talk about impeachment at this point?"
BASS: "You know that coming from our leader the speaker has been very clear that impeachment is not the direction that we’re going. Now individual members can do what individual members want to do. But in terms of the leadership in the majority of the caucus we have an agenda are for the people agenda talking about prescription drugs infrastructure etc. That is our focus. It makes no sense from my point of view, but you know, we’re a body of 235 Democrats. You have individuals where impeachment is on the top of their mind. But I do believe that the majority of the caucus follows the speaker."
REPORTER: "Does this report undercut that argument for some of those members?"
BASS: "You know, I haven’t talked to them but I wouldn’t think so. Again, how can it undercut their arguments when we haven’t seen the report? All we have is a memo from a man who was clearly partisan and was auditioning for the job before he got it. So, I think there might be a more appropriate question after people actually have the report the underlying evidence. that’s really hard to make decisions based on a four page memo."
REPORTER: "But ultimately as far as the legislative agenda is concerned doesn’t the investigations the calls for impeachment essentially suck the air out of the room. As far as the legislative agenda is concerned going into 2020. "
BASS: "No no, it would suck the air out of the room if we weren’t doing anything but we actually need all of your help too, so that when we do pass legislation related to guns when we do have a hearing over the Violence Against Women Act when we do have a hearing over voting rights that it’s actually covered. So, we’re doing work but it is a question of what the media chooses to cover.”
