‘She was poor? That was the Republican response to the State of the Union’

ERNST: “We were raised to live simply, not to waste. It was a lesson my mother taught me every rainy morning. You see, growing up, I had only one good pair of shoes. So on rainy school days, my mom would slip plastic bread bags over them to keep them dry. But I was never embarrassed.”

AXLER: “She was so poor. In order not to [indecipherable] her good shoes, she’d put red bags on her shoes and the whole bus would have red bags over their shoes. Then, they looked at it and her farm received $460,000 with the farm subsidies from the government. She was poor? That was the response to the State of the Union address. That was the Republican address to the State of the Union."
