Michael Sam told Oprah Winfrey that coming out as gay was the “right choice,” but he would have preferred to do so after informing the team that drafted him.

Sam, the first openly gay man to play in an NFL game, told Oprah in a previously-released clip that there are other gay men in the NFL, some of whom have reached out to him.

After informing his University of Missouri coaches of his sexual orientation and subsequently being named SEC co-defensive player of the year, Sam said he “made the right choice to come out.”

Oprah also asked Sam if the “infamous kiss,” as he calls it, was staged. Sam said “absolutely not,” adding he thought the cameras would only be filming during the moment he got drafted.

“Everyone made a big deal out of it,” Sam said. “It’s just a kiss. Did you forget that I was gay? Should I be kissing a woman instead?”

Overall, Sam believes he handled everything the right way, and said he was “proud” of how he did.

Sam, who was cut from the St. Louis Rams after the preseason and was waived from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad in October, is currently a free agent but said he still hopes to play in the NFL next season.
