Charles Blow: In Dept. Stores I’m Mistaken for an Employee ‘All the Time’

‘After decades of it happening, your brain starts to do what your brain does which is try to make connections, try to figure out what is happening and why is this happening to me all the time?’

NYT's Charles Blow on Obama: In Department Stores I Get Mistaken As An Employee "All The Time" (RealClearPolitics)

New York Times columnist Charles Blow appeared on CNN this afternoon to discuss the People magazine interview with the Obamas in which President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama reveal experiences where they believe they were mistaken for employees because of their race and stereotypes.

The First Lady recalls the time she secretly went to Target and someone asked her to grab something off the shelf for her. Michelle Obama implied this occurred because she is black.

"The only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off the shelf because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone that could help her. Those kind of things happen in life so it isn't anything new," Michelle Obama told People magazine.
