Johnny Joey Jones: NASCAR Has Learned to Tackle as a Community the Same Issues the NFL Has

‘NASCAR knows its place in society’

EXCERPT:

JONES: "NASCAR knows its place in our society. It is entertainment. It's something we have to pay for through viewership and tickets. And they understand they have to connect with us. One of the things that NASCAR went through just a few years ago was the removal of rebel flags from events. That was something that the fan base understood, accepted and embraced. There is a NASCAR driver, Diversity Program. The same issues that maybe Colin Kaepernick or some of the NFL players bring to life exist in every walk of life, but NASCAR has learned to embrace those issues and tackle them as a community, not in a divisive way. One of the things people will say is that NASCAR is somehow a southern sport, so that makes it different. The last nine champions over the last 20 years were from the West Coast. The last champion was from New Jersey, racing for a team out in Colorado. It is a national sport. They just understand how to connect to the fan base and honor our men and women in uniform."
